The Genuine Article
New Jersey's Original Small Town Railroad
The Black River & Western Railroad is not a museum piece: it's a working
shortline railroad serving passengers and industrial customers in rural
Hunterdon County, NJ since 1964. Our passenger trains are operated with antique
railroad equipment by the volunteers of the Black River Railroad Historical
Trust - a 501(c)3 not-for-profit corporation. Come experience the charm of
small-town railroading on one of our weekend passenger excursions, or for some
added entertainment visit one of our family-friendly special events. Whether you
want to spend a night out on the town, explore a corn maze, meet Santa, or help
solve a murder-mystery, we have a train for you!
Get Involved
Ever day-dream about being the Conductor of a passenger train or getting behind the throttle of a
massive diesel or steam locomotive? Come make it a reality with the Black River
Railroad Historical Trust. Our entire staff consists of volunteer
railroaders that have day jobs...just like you. Members of the Trust receive
railroad training (no prior experience required) and can move up through the
ranks to participate in any railroad job they desire! In addition to train crew
volunteers, we are always looking for assistance with "support" jobs such as
equipment restoration and repair, grounds maintanance, event planning, and more.
Visit the About page for details on how you can get involved!
